Which Layer House Dimensions Should Be Checked Before Finalizing the Cage Layout?

By Zhao Jinhong | Henan Daofeng Livestock Equipment Co., Ltd.
You already have a poultry house and want to arrange cages inside it. Before finalizing the cage layout, verify the usable internal space and equipment access route. Check clear width and length, clearance above each equipment position and the space needed at the ends. External dimensions provide context but do not describe all these conditions.
This guide provides general checks for discussing a cage layout, including houses designed without central columns. The drawings and photographs are separate references, not confirmed views of one project. Confirm the relevant drawing revision, dimensions and site conditions with the equipment and building professionals before finalizing a layout. If you are still gathering basic project details, start with the information needed before a layer farm quotation.

Measure between the surfaces equipment must fit within

Measure internal clear width between the finished inner faces, recording where each measurement was taken. Wall thickness, lining and side-wall projections can make this different from an external dimension. Take checks at relevant positions along the house rather than assuming one width applies everywhere. Record internal clear length separately from the space reserved at each end.

Ridge height is not equipment clearance

Ridge height and eaves height are reference dimensions; neither alone establishes the clearance above each equipment position. Measure vertically from the finished floor level at each proposed equipment location to the underside of the lowest overhead obstruction at that location. If the floor is unfinished, record the level datum used and the expected finished floor level, keeping current measurements separate from planned finished conditions. Identify the obstruction and the area it affects; a low point over one position does not define the clearance throughout the house.

Distinguish the Farm Site Plan from the Poultry-House Cross-Section

A layer farm site plan shows the arrangement across the farm. A poultry-house cross-section shows the building and equipment across an individual house. Each answers a different layout question.
The Layer Farm Site Layout Plan shows the positions of layer houses and supporting areas, including egg storage, the feed room, roads and manure-handling areas. The air-drying area is marked as reserved. The plan does not establish the internal clearance or equipment installation spacing within an individual house.

Panel 1 — Poultry-House Cross-Section and Cage Arrangement shows the relationship between the building and the cage rows across the house. Panel 2 — Cage Cross-Section Detail is a separate equipment view. These views help identify the space relationships to review; interpreting dimensions requires confirmation of the drawing units, dimension boundaries, equipment model and site conditions.

The internal clear length, end spaces and complete equipment access route still need to be checked against the corresponding house floor plan, detail drawings and site records. Do not transfer dimensions between these separate drawing references.

Check Roof Conditions, End Space and Equipment Access Together

Check the roof arrangement above the proposed equipment positions. Where braces, projecting connections or other overhead obstructions are present, record their positions and extent. Include any columns or wall projections actually found on site in the same record.
At each end, identify the space needed for drives, egg and manure transfers, assembly and access. Check the approach and turning space around any proposed equipment opening, including thresholds, floor changes and fixed items. The guide to poultry-house openings and equipment connections explains the related building interfaces.

A hypothetical comparison with the same external dimensions

Hypothetical example: two clear-span steel houses have the same external dimensions. In House A, the proposed equipment zone sits below an unobstructed part of the roof, and components can enter through an accessible end opening. In House B, a brace extends lower over part of that zone and the entry route requires a turn beside fixed equipment.
These differences can affect equipment positioning, assembly and access. Compare the affected positions with the selected equipment requirements before choosing a layout.

A practical field checklist

Give the following checklist to the person recording the site. Use metres or millimetres consistently and state the unit beside each value. Identify whether a value was measured on site, taken from a drawing or based on a planned finished condition.
Check
Measurement Location and Reference
Why it affects layout
Record or supporting evidence
Internal clear width and length
Between finished inner faces; mark each station.
Defines the actual area available for equipment.
Values, units, end-space boundaries and a marked sketch.
Local overhead clearance
Vertically from the local finished floor level to the lowest overhead obstruction at that position.
An obstruction may affect only a specific equipment zone.
Location, extent, lower edge and matching photo.
End space and transfers
End wall to equipment end; egg and manure transfer areas.
Drives, transfers and access need their own space.
Fixed items, intended connection areas and photos.
Equipment entry route
Clear opening after frames and thresholds; approach and turns.
Components must reach the intended assembly position.
Opening width and height, route sketch, steps and obstructions.
Floor Level Changes, Pits and Trenches
Use an identified floor datum; mark affected areas.
Changes can affect setting-out, movement or transfers.
Datum, current levels, planned finished floor level, boundaries and photographs.
Maintenance and Personnel Access
Along equipment sides and at access points.
Operating and service access must be reviewed together.
Existing restrictions and intended access routes.
Other supports if present
Columns, supports or wall projections actually on site.
Local restrictions may change positioning.
Position and extent; do not assume they exist.

Check the opening and nearby approach space. The full equipment access route requires separate verification.

Make each measurement traceable

For each relevant position, record the value, measuring faces, unit, source and review status. Keep the reviewer and review date separate from the original recorder and measurement date. A marked sketch and a matching photograph help explain the measurement.

Keep drawing and site differences visible

When a site measurement differs from the drawing, keep both values and identify the location, drawing revision and measurement date. Ask the relevant equipment and building professionals to resolve the difference before finalizing the affected layout.
Record measurements only from safe, accessible positions. Roof-level checks, structural questions and proposed alterations require suitably qualified people and appropriate access arrangements. A photograph cannot establish load capacity or authorize cutting a brace.

Start with the records you have

Share the project location, production purpose and whether the house is built, under construction or planned, together with the drawings, measurements or photos you already have. Mark what is confirmed and what needs checking. Through layer farm planning and equipment coordination, DAOFENG can discuss the layout information with manufacturing and technical teams. The appropriate local professionals remain responsible for building structure and local civil work.
Discuss your poultry-house layout using the information available now. After first contact, drawings or photographs can be shared through an agreed channel. You do not need a complete engineering file to begin the discussion.
